World Bank withdraws support for Thar coal project

World Bank withdraws support for Thar coal project

The World Bank’s withdrawal of support for the Thar coal project has been criticized as discriminatory by the Sindh government.

This decision by the World Bank was prompted by a lack of emphasis on Thar coal resources as part of the national energy policy.
The Sindh government believes that the World Bank’s policy is inconsistent as it is supporting coal projects in other countries and has approved a coal project in South Africa where it has authorized a $3.75 billion coal mining and power project. The Bank has also initiated similar projects in Botswana and India.
