Melting glaciers, not rains solely responsible for recent floods!

The main cause of recent floods is melting of glaciers in the upper parts of the country, which are dissipating at a faster speed, as compared to those in the rest of the world. This was stated by Prof M. Iqbal Khan, the first and only glaciologist, in an interview to APP.

Mr. Khan who visited Antarctica, told APP, “I have warned everyone about the floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera due to the global warming in my previous interviews, but nobody took notice and the result is before us”.

“It is the glaciers, which are adding fuel to the fire and due to the melting of glaciers the flood situation is aggravated”, he added. There are a total of 202 dominant glaciers which contain huge quantities of water, he informed, terming the glaciers as “frozen water resources” which are melting at a fast pace, as the recent decade has experienced exceptional environmental changes throughout the world because of global warming.

Khan stated that over 50% of frozen water resources have been lost and warned that there would be a severe water scarcity in coming years. The main cause of recent floods is melting of glaciers in the upper parts of the country, which are dissipating at a faster speed, as compared to those in the rest of the world.
