Italian Archaeologists have been operating in Pakistan over 60 years ago, with the first surveys conducted in 1955 by Prof. Giuseppe Tucci, the famous Tibetologist and Orientalist, whom established a permanent mission of the Italian Institute of Far and Middle Eastern Studies as from 1956.
The Swat Archaeological Museum was originally built in 1958 with a master plan designed by the Italian architect Vittorio Caroli and was damaged by the 2005 earthquake first and a bomb blast in 2008.
