Economist Shahid Kardar appointed new SBP Governor

Shahid Hafeez Kardar has been appointed Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for a period of three years. He assumed charge of the office with effect from September 9, 2010 after the post had been lying vacant for about three months following the resignation of Syed Salim Raza as Governor SBP. He is the 16th governor of SBP since its inception in 1948.

An economist of repute, Shahid is the son of the famous cricketer Abdul Hafeez Kardar. Before joining SBP, Kardar was associated with Issues and Policies Consultants as Managing Partner since 2001. He had also served as Minister for Finance, Planning & Development, Excise and Taxation and Industries and Mineral Development, Government of Punjab from November 1999 to January 2001.

Kardar regularly provides consultancy services to multilateral and bilateral donors like the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, etc. He has also authored three books, namely: Reflections on Pakistan’s Economy; The Political Economy of Pakistan and Polarisation in the Regions: The Roots of Discontent, besides writing several research papers covering economic and social issues of the country.
