Diamer-Bhasha Dam foundation laid

19th October 2011: PM Yousuf Raza Gilani  laid the foundation stone for Diamer-Bhasha Dam, terming it a “lifeline” for Pakistan’s economy that would help meet the country’s future agricultural and power requirements.

The $12 billion project of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, which will be the world’s highest concrete dam on River Indus, is estimated to generate 19 billion units of electricity annually and enhance the life of Tarbela Dam by over 35 years.
The mega project would generate 4500MW electricity and store over 8 million acre feet of water to meet the country’s growing power and irrigation needs.
