The biggest ever bank robbery in the country took place at an Allied Bank branch when guards of a private security company looted the bank of foreign currency and rupees worth Rs 311.2 million last Sunday.
According to police, the main suspect, Shahid Mehmood,a guard of a private security company arrived at the bank at 7.30 am, half an hour before his reporting time.Four accomplices who arrived later with a gas cutter, they tied up the two guards, Imran and Zamir, and the building’s watchman. In three hours they managed to break into the strong room which has seven large vaults.Shahid knew which vault contained foreign currency.
On the advice of the police, the Sindh home department has cancelled the licence of the Security Protection Service, the security company which had hired Shahid just two months ago and had given him the uniform without adequate training and posted him at such a sensitive location.
