A highly successful model and actor, Iman is no stranger to fame. She claims, though, that she doesn’t follow the fast and glamour-ridden lifestyle that models are believed to lead, and enjoys being at home in the company of a good book. She loves classics, and talks about them enthusiastically, “I’m going to read Charles Dickens again! I have been reading and re-reading Jane Austen for quite a while. I absolutely loved Emma by Jane Austen.” She also loves collecting books. Very excitedly, she tells me about her recent purchase: a book which was printed almost a century ago, in 1910! Iman recently finished reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and talks about it, “What I really liked about it was the fact that it had a very different portrayal of Afghanistan. We don’t even know much about the country and just think of it as a ‘backward’ country. I really liked how the characters of the hero and the villain were completely different as human beings. I think that just shows you how, from the same culture and place, you can have completely different kinds of people. We think of all Afghanis as extremists and terrorists, and that really can’t be true. Not everybody can be the same. There can be certain people in a country that one might hate, but you can’t hate the entire country! So, I think it just clarified a lot in that aspect and you start to feel for the Afghanis, for the country that they once had and don’t have anymore and the freedom that they enjoyed. Also, the way the place has been described is amazing. After reading the book, I actually felt like going there!” The Kite Runner has been made into a film as well, and Iman says that she can’t wait for it to be released so that she can watch it. She also wants to get her hands on A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author, as she is quite sure that it will make a brilliant read as well. — Mariam Shah
